This new autobiography details Bucy’s early life as well as his rise from research assistant to President and then CEO of Texas Instruments, managing projects ranging from digital computers, sophisticated weapons, complex semiconductors, the humble calculator and factories worldwide.

Dropping out of college to farm and marrying his sweetheart, Odetta, he soon gets the urge to attend college again, this time to major in physics, and he eventually earns a master’s degree. His life forever changes when he’s put in charge of a project at Texas Instruments to design a computer that refines the search for underground oil, the fastest of its time.
Bucy’s straightforward manner served him well with management, and he slowly rose to positions of greater influence, like Vice President of Semiconductor Operations, promoting innovations like a computerized manufacturing line that propelled Texas Instruments into the forefront of technology for the government, industry and consumers. The handheld calculator and Speak & Spell toy were just a few of his success stories. The memoir includes moments not connected to Bucy’s career, like attending the Democratic National Convention in 1968 and seeing his cousin Martha screaming at the speaker and advising the U.S. government about export regulations. Photos from Bucy’s family and Texas Instrument archives illustrate the book, which was edited by Kenneth Martin.
Author J. Fred Bucy grew up on the South Plains of Texas against the backdrop of the Great Depression, Dust Bowl and World War II, destined to become a farmer until he earned a physics degree and joined a young company known as Texas Instruments Inc. He eventually became CEO. Bucy and his wife, Odetta, had three children and numerous grandchildren.
